The UKPGA has made a submission to the independent review of corporate governance in the UK banking industry being carried out by Sir David Walker.

The Terms of Reference for the review are to examine corporate governance in the UK banking industry and make recommendations, including in the following areas:

• the effectiveness of risk management at board level, including the incentives in remuneration policy to manage risk effectively;
• the balance of skills, experience and independence required on the boards of UK banking institutions;
• the effectiveness of board practices and the performance of audit, risk, remuneration and nomination committees;
• the role of institutional shareholders in engaging effectively with companies and monitoring of boards;
• whether the UK approach is consistent with international practice and how national and international best practice can be promulgated; and
• whether the recommendations of the review are applicable to other financial institutions.

The 2010 UK Policy Governance Academy is planned for 24-28 May 2010 in London.

The Academy, which is run by John and Miriam Carver, will be held at Birkbeck, University of London, under the auspices of the UK Policy Governance Association and the London School of Corporate Governance and Ethics at Birkbeck.

The UK Policy Governance Association (UKPGA) in association with the new London Centre for Corporate Governance and Ethics at Birkbeck, London University, are holding a workshop on Wednesday 22 October. The event will take place in the Council Room at Birkbeck (see maps) and will focus on building effective NHS boards using Policy Governance.

The use of Policy Governance at Southend University Hospital NHS foundation trust will be a specific case study with both the Chair and CEO of the trust making presentations and participating in a ‘board governance surgery’.

The UK Policy Governance Association is planning to hold a one day event exploring the practical application of the Carver Policy Governance model in building high performing NHS boards. Policy Governance is, essentially, an ‘operating system’ for boards that can make good governance come to life. The system can take account of ‘traditional’ governance approaches, such as ‘integrated governance’ and the Monitor Governance Code for NHS foundation trusts, leaving your board free to get on with the job of governing the organisation.
